RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
♦ This Day. (Before Mr. T. A, Mansford, R.M.) DRUNKENNESS. The following persons were punished in the manner stated for drunkenness : — R. Allridge, fined 10s or 48 hours; H Johnson, fined 10s or 48 hours; William Reid, fined 10s or 48 hours; Clarence Robertson, fined 10s or 48 hours ; and John Fraser, fined 10s or 48 hours. ILLS G ALLY ON PREMISES. Patrick Nolan was charged with having been illegally on the premises of Frank Mountain, at the New Zealander Hotel, at an early hour on Sunday morning. He pleaded guilty, but said it was " a mistake." Mr. Mountain stated that he found accused in the passage opposite one of his bedrooms, which wa< occupied by a man who had come from Auckland and who had a large sum cf money with him. Witness and the night watchman asked accused to go away, but he would not do so, and as he was very abusive, a policeman was sent for, and he was given into custody. Accused appeared to be drunk at first, but when the policeman arrived he seemed to be a'l right. Accused stated that be had just arrived from Christchurch, and that he had arranged to stop at the hotel for the night He then went out to get a drink, and when he went back to the house be was told by one of the servants to go upstairs. He then went upstairs and lay down in the passage. Detective Brown said ha had known accused for some time, but there was nothing mgtinst him except an occasional fondness for drink. Prisoner was sentenced to 24 hours' imprisonment. A DBBBBTBK. Charles Thomson, alias J. Hooper, was charged with having deserted from H.M.S Nytnphe on the 13th August, 1879. A witness stated that the accused had informed him that he was a deserter from the Royal Navj, but accused denied having done so. Mr. Mansford adjourned the ease until Thursday next, and in the meantime the police will communicate with the police in Auckland with the view of getting a description of the man who deserted from the Nymphe.
