ANOTHER VICTORY for WELLINGTON.

Cfkom oub own CHBIBTOHURCH, 28th August From the fact of Wellington name beaten Otago on Monday, the football match to-day betwoen Canterbury and Wellington was looked forward to with the keenest anticipation of a close contest. The Canterbury men hid a ! much stronger team than they played against Otago, and the betting was slightly in favor of Canterbury, though they were by no means confident of winning. The ground w?« in capital condition, and the weather glorious. A large number of people assembled on the ground to witness tho game. Wellington kicked off the ball. The first spell was siightly in favor of Canterbury. Neither sido scored, the game being desperately fought on both sides. The game continued pretty evenly contested until the end of the third ttvonty minutes. The Wellington men, who played in splendid form, then put on a desperate spurt, and Gr'braith got a touch-down, from which Bayley scored a goal. In the last round, the Canterbury team, seeing tho critica' state of affairs, fought bravely to save the match. A maul in goal resulted in the home team obtaining a touch-down. In takinpc their try, howover, .the ball rebounded off one of tho Wellington men, spoiliog the goal. Wellington thus won by a gop' to a touch-down.

Canterbury had a stronger team than they played against Otago, but tbe Wellington team was the same as on Monday, with the exception of Burns, who played in place of Thomson. Up to nearly the end of the third spell, the game was slightly in favor of Canterbury, though Wellington played a hard I and plucky game Wellington then made a desperate rush, and Galbraith got a touch- | down, and Bayloy kicked a goal. The last spell was very exciting, and the play fast. Canterbury played up iv splendid ionn, and after a desperate struggle, close to the goal post«, there was a maul in goal between Anderson and Ronaldson, and the former got a touch-down, amidst intense excitement and cheers. Milton took tbe place of kick, but Wellington rushed him, and tho ball touching one of the latter, no goal was scored, though the ball went over the cross-bar. Time wps called shortly after, and tbe game ended in favor of Wellington by one goal to one touchdown or try. The visiting teams wi'l be entertained at a dinner to-night. This Day. Last night a body of footballers assembled opposite the private house of Councillor Cass, who had, in his seat in tho Council, made some disparaging remarks regarding football and other athletic sports. They threw missiles agair>st the house, and otHrwfra behaved in an uproarious fashion. Cp«s will take proceedings against the offenders.
