THE RESULT OP THE HUTT ELECTION. 4, The result of yesterday's election for the Hntt district is entirely satisfactory, notwithstanding that no political principle was involved in the contest, which, was purely one of men and not of measures. It was impossible for anyone possessing the slightest knowledge of politics to detect the faintest difference in the expressed opinions of the two candidates, and those who desired to make it appear that differences did exist were driven to the necessity of inventing them, and of suppressing such utterances on the part of either as were not consistent with these inventions. Failing the existence of any real diversity of political opinion, the contest became narrowed to the less important issue of one man against another ; and it is a matter for congratulation alike to the Hutt electors and to the community generally that the choice of the constituency has fallen on Mr. Henry Jackson. The newly elected member has shown himself capable of taking a large and liberal view of the chief political questions of the day, while his personal abilities are undoubted and his special knowledge and experience in- regard to several important subjects — notably the survey and settlement of the waste lands — will make him a valuable acquisition to the House of Representatives. The large majority recorded in his favor was somewhat of a surprise, although an agreeable one, as showing that the Hutt electors are thoroughly awake to the importance at this critical juncture of entrusting their public interests to a capable representative, and one who will do them credit. From all points of view therefore the result of the election may be regarded with unqualified satisfaction.
