CHRiSTCHURCH. 30th June.

The shipwrecked crew of the barque B. L. are staying in Chris tchurch. They leave again to-morrow (or New Brighton. It is thought a goad part of ihe cargo may be savod. A man named Paul Clifford was smothered to-day, while working as a diver at the wreck of the barque Bells. He had on a divinfc apparatus with an air tube, but when released a very small quantity of air was found in the helmet, and the man was quite dead, although ho had only been down a little over ten minutes. An inquest will be held to-morrow. The registrar's returns for Christchurch and district during June are as follow* :— Births, 167 ; marriages, 20 ; deaths, 39 For the halfyear the returns arc -Births, 1029; deaths, 443; marriages, 215. A man named Dillon was arrested at Amberley for obtninibg £105 from Royse, Steed, and Co , by fraudulent representations. Edward Dillon was charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court with obtaining an order for the payment from Royse, Stead & Co for £75 by ialso pretences. On a second count he was charged with obtaining an order fur the payment of £40, and a thre-hing machine which ho obtained on the faith of his farm being freehold. Since his bankruptcy, however, the farm had appeared in tho name of hi 3 brother. The case was remanded to the 4th. The floods up country are decreasing. There was a heavy rain last night.
