ANOTHER VESSEL ASHORE. Timaru. This Day.
The weather Is fine to-day, but tha sea is rough A telegram was received from Tomuka this morning;, stating that a vessel was in the surf at the moutb of the river. The steamer Beautiful Star wt>s at ones sent to her assistance, and is now towing her in. Her name is not known. Au inquest will be held this afternoon on the bodies of the drowned from the Akabar ca Sunday ; also oa the sailor off the Beautiful Star. Christchurch, 30th June. As tlie accounts of Siturday's floods come in from tie country districts, it appears that the damage done has been very great and general. At Eaiit Malvern the water-race has been injured 'v> the extent of £1500. The formation of the railway extension from Sheffield to tho Kowai Pass has been swept away fn many places. On the main road'toi'Akaroa not a bridge or a culvert is left uninjured. Miles of fencing have been destroyed in. various parts. The railways are greatly damaged in so many places that it would be tedious to give details. It is now raining again heavily, and a message from Amberley states that there is every prospect of a flood there to-night. * Accounts of a very heavy flood come from tbe Akaroa district. All the roads are more or less damaged, and a number of bridges have been carried away. Numerous landslips have occurred., one of which killed a young mtin. Oamaru, 30th June. Railway communications with Palmerston is interrupted, and it is expected tbat it will be several days before trains can run to Timaru, as there are three gaps in the line to repair. Twenty piers'in the bridge over the Kakanui River have been partly destroyed, but no other damage of any moment is reported. The weather is now fine.
