THE ARTILLERY BAND. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST.

Sir — I noticed a paragraph hi your last night's issue relative to the artillery band having sent an application to the Government to be transferred to the Naval Brigade. As you remark, sir, it would be a great pity if the artillery are left without a band, considering that they have had such an excellent one fur so many years, and they have been to a great outlay recently in providing the band with a costly and nice-looking uniform; but as all the instruments, with the exception of the leading ones, are the property of the battery, I don't think there would be any difficulty in getting up a new band equal to, if not better than, the old one. From what I can hear, certain members at the head of the battery have themselves to thank for the present state of affair*. It appears that a short time ago several members of the band were rather dissatisfied with its working, and they solicited an enquiry from head-quarters, and wished for a re-organization of the whole band ; but their complaints were entirely ignored, and hence the result in the Wellington Artillery Band, which at one time was, and might still have been, a band second to none in the colony, seceding from the corps. I am, &c, Civilian. Wellington, 21st May, 1879. The Scientific American pays a tribute to women in saying that the larger proportion of inventions patented by the gentler sex prove more useful and profitable than these of men.
