CHRISTCHURCH.

17th May. A man named William Barnard, butcher at Kaiapoi, was arrested to night in town, charged with stealing 400 sheep, the property of Robert Chapman, Spring Bank run' Moeraki Djwos. Notice has been given of nine applications for licenses to new hotels in Christchurch. Amongst the applicants is Mr. J. E. Coker, late ot Wellington, and well, known as an hotelkeeper throughout the colony. An inquest was held this afternoon on the body of John Goodwin, which was taken out of the Avon on Thursday. Mary Anne Roe, a daughter of deceased, said she last saw her father alive on Wednesday at bis own house, Hare wood-road. The jury gave a verdict of " found drowned," and added a rider, " That some protection is needed at that portion of the river bank to prevent similar casualties' in future." Mr. J. J. Loo, of Leeston, runholder and merchant, attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself with a breeh-loading gun in hti private office about noon to-day. The charge glanced off his cheek-bone, aud hopes are entertained of his recovery. The reason is stated to be temporary monetary embarassinent. The Mayor of Chri'tchurch has requested that Monday the 26th instant, instead of Saturday, the 24th instant, be proclaimed a public holiday, on account of the latter being market day. Hiscocks and Hayman's dramatic company at the Theatre Royal are doing a moderate business. At the Gaiety Miss Amy Johns took a benefit on Friday night. There was a crowded house. Some new dramatic serio-comic business takes place at the Gaiety on Monday evening, Misses Lizzie Morgan and Jenny Nye being engaged. Miss Dargon and Mr. Wybert Reeves are engaged for New Zealand by Messrs. Hiscocks and Hayman.
