BUILDING REGULATIONS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST.
Sir— l desire to call the attention of the public to tbe negligence displayed by the Council's officers in the matter of Building Regulations : After an immensity of trouble, regulations were passed . which apparently are effective when enforced, but as far as J fean see the only fruit is that the City Surveyor levies a Tee on all persons erecting bouses in the outskirts of the town. Those clauses of the regulations which provide that buildings to be erected or In "course of alteration in the heart of the city shall be of less inflammable materials have' already become a dead letter. I need only mention the building g^ing up in Willis-street, Lear the Empire Hotel, tbe shed erected by-Mr. Palmer in Featherston-street, and tbe additions lately made -to the rear of tbeir offices on Lamblon Quay by Messrs. Hart & Bucklev.^to prove tht truth of this statement. If the regulations are still so badly drawn as, to be powerless to prevent this scandal, by all means let the City Solicitor have another try at amending them ; but if they are binding, why dees not the City Surveyor step' in aud insist that all buildings or additions shall be erected in conformity with their clauses ?
