WAIMATE PLAINS DIFFICULTY. (PER PRESS AGENCY.) Hawera, 29th March.
Mr. Williams went across the river to-day, carrying, as he say», the Government ultima* turn, which is stated to be to tbe effect that if surveyors are again removed from the plains Whitmore and the East Coast natives are to be sent up here; but the people who have beard the news are somewhat incredulous about it. If Mr. Sheehw comes up sptedily, and has a talk with the chiefs, tbe general opinion of those best informed is that the peace and credit of the colony can be preserved ; but they insist that they should be heard on this confiscation question, which they have not been as yet. 31st March. James Mackay arrived here as Government agent to settle the Ngatiranui difficulty. It is stated that in tbe portion of land surveyed on the Plains the native reserves were ignored altogether, and some people are of opinion that this had something to do with the bother which has arisen.
