PRESENTATION TO INSPECTOR JAMES.

A very handsomely illuminated and framed address was at last night's City Council meeting presented by the Mayor, ou behalf of Jiie inhabitants of Hokitika, "to Inspector James. The address was ns follows :—": — " To W. H. James, Esq., Superintendent of Police, Hokitika, New Zealand.— Dear sir : We, tho Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Hokitika, desire, on the eve of your departure from the West Coast, to testify our appreciation of the ability and zeal you have at all times displayed here while filling the office of inspector, and more recently that of Superintendent of the Police force of Westland. In connection with municipal matters we have had every opportunity of forming a correct judgment of your character, and from an experience of your business habits, combined with your general courtesy, we feel that the district is losing a most efficient officer. It is, however, with much satisfaction wo learn that you have been selected to fill so important a position as that ot Superintendent of Constabulary in the chief city of the colony, and wishing you every prosperity in your new sphere of duty, we remain, &c — (Signed by the Mayor an<i Councillors), Hokitika, 14th January." In making the presentation, the Mayor said he felt sure the citizens of Wellington would welcome a gentleman who came so highly recommended. He hoped that at th i close of his service in Wellington he would be equally highly spoken of by tho people here. Inspector Jame^, in acknowledging tbe gift, said it was gratifying to find that his efforts during fourteen years on the West Coast bad beon appreciated, and he would ever endeavor to do bis duty in tho future as in the past.
