— • CANTERBURY V. MELBOURNE C.C. (PEOM OUR OWI CORRESPONDENT.) Melbourne, Bth January. No further addition was made to the score of tbe Melbourne Club in their second innings as telegraphed yesterday. Tennent was caught by Ollivier, off W. Friths bowling, after playing a splendid innings of 75. Kendall carried out his bat for 54, the innings closing 'for 2^*s The Canterbury men thus, having been in a minority of 56 in the first innings, commenced their second innings with the formidable total of 292 runs required to avert a defeat. The task of putting together such a large number of runs proved too much for the Canterbury men, and although Watson, Ollivier, Neilson, and Frith all batted in fine form, they could only bring up the total to 123. thus sustaining a defeat by 169 runs. The result was owing mainly to the splendid bowling of Alexander, who took nine wickets. The Melbourne fielding, with one or two exceptions, was good. Score :—
