RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (Before Mr. Mansford, R.M.) THRBA/TintlNO A COB STABLE. J. Monagban was charged with using threatening language to Constable Phair. Complainant stated that on tbe night of the 17(h instant he was in Scustix-square when defendant's wite complained 1,0 him that her husband had come home drunk and locked her out with her child. Witneis went to tbe house, and after some trouble procured admittance for the woman. Defendant afterwards came up to him in the street and used threatening and abusive language to him. Mr. Ollivier, who appeared for the defence, expressed the defendant's regret at bavins used the language in question. Mr. Mansford imposed a fine of 20s and costs. ALLEGED FORGISY. Arthur L. Sweet was charged with forging a cheque, value Jg9 20s.
Henry Wilson,' refreshment-keeper of Lsmbton Quay, stated that about three weeks ago prisoner, who was then in no employment came to board with him. About a week afterware's he got employment at B. J. Jones's and paid witness 10s on account. On Christmas Day prisoner tendered him a cheque for £3 10s, purporting to be drawn by Jones, in payment of £1 10s which be owed him, and witness gave him £2 change. He passed it into the Bank and it was returned marked " no account." Benjamin J. Jones, storekeeper, Courtenayplace, deposed that he did not sign the cheque in question, nor did he give the prisoner authority to sign it. By the prisoner— Tbe initials "8.F." are not mine. Perry C. Browne, clerk at the Colonial Bank, deposed that no person named B. F. or B. J. Jones had an account at the Bank. Mr. Mansford said that this was not a ca«e of forgery, neither was it a case of uttering a forged document. The evidence was quite conclusive, however, that the prisoner had been passing a valueless cheque. It was not a case that he should dispose of, and he should commit the prisoner to take his trial at the next criminal sessions of the Supreme Court.
