AUCKLAND. 3rd January.

Henry Niccol was charged at tho Resident Magistrate's Court this morning with the larceny of £40 from the dwelling-house of John Adams. He was remanded for a week, bail being refused. The accused is the son of an old and respected family in Auckland. • The Herald to-day, iv a leading article, says :— " The Premier's speech at Granamstown has been commented on by the principal Southern papers, and the tone prevailing is, in most of the articles, that of disappointment. Of course, it was only to be expected that the organs of the Opposition should attack the ppeecb, and seize every occasion it offered, or that could be manufactured out of the topics or allusions dealt with, to cast reproach on the Ministry, aud especially on the Premier. It is the fact that the dissatisfaction to which we referred has been expressed by several influential journals which hitherto have given the present Government strong and independent support,- which is significant. We do not suppose that this shows a change of front on tne part of those journals; and, indeed, what they have said will prove more salutary to thtir friends than long strings of praise. There Was a general expectation throughout the country that the Premier, when he addressed his constituents, would do something in the way of pulling his party together, and setting forth a programme for next session; a programme of measures in a direction in which some movement has already been raaoe, but less extensive than that of last Sjision, and more practical, haying eliminated from it those •subjects as to which the House and country have shown such entire apathy, that no Ministry can expect to do anythiug with them. A "public man may advocate changes, respecting which he stands almost alone, but a Minister must do the work which tha country expects of him. It was thought that the Premier would dwell on tho achievements of the Ministry, which were unquestionably great; would make a point of their vast and enduring importance; and seek to arouse interest in the matters which the Ministry purpose to. deal with in the future. It is not to be wonfered at that disappointment should he felt, when it was found that a large part of the Premier's speech was occupied with the discussion ol* subjects in which the Urge mass of the people feel very little interest." At the Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Court next week there are ten casos : four of larceny ; one (Thomas Fidgets), pkcing obstruction on the- railway; thWfe^btaining money by false pretences ; one (Chas. Cowall), cattle stealing; one (Matthew Walsh), indecent assault. In the cricket match, Auckland United v. Taranaki, Auckland won the toss, and decided to go in first. At 1.30 Auckland had only scored 40 for 7 wickets, all the best players going out for small scores. Robinson made a good stand for 17. Mumford, Yates, Lynch, Coleman, Blunden, and Buckland, all went out fur small scores. Carter made a capital stand with Ivens, bringing the score up to 09, i when the latter was bowled Ivens is a young player, and promises to make a, good cricketer; his cuts and drives were greatly admired. Rees scored 13, Whittaker scored 2, and Carte? carried his bat out for 29, the total of the innings being 02. ~ » 4th January. Tne cricket match was resumed to-day. The Taranaki Eleveu are all out for 187. The bowling of Lynch to-day, was very good. The Auckland team are now going in for their second innings.
