The cricket match between the Taranaki representative team and the Auckland Club commenced in the Domain this morning. The weather was fine, and the attendance large. Auckland went in first, and made 122, the highest individual scores being Wood and L&nkham, 20 each ; Blunden 19, and Grierson 13. The Taranaki team insde 95 la their first tailings, including t). Bnyley 89, Bewley 23, and Davis 17. Auckland then went in for the second innings, and made 70, the bowling and fielding of the Tarauaki men being so good that only one " extra " was seared.. 2nd January. Bridget Connally, a married woman, resident at Newton, committed suicide yesterday by taking poison. The deceased bad been reclaimed from horribly habits of drinli for the past two year*, aria became temperate. She ire-commenced to drink at Christmas, and returned home on Monday quite drunk. The following morning she asked her huubacd for money to obtain drink. He refused to give her any. Sks then said she would take a bitter cup during the day, and shortly afterwards ' took a bottle off the shelf, containing; carbolic acid, and drank it. Two girls, who were present at the time, were taken by surprise, and the act was done before it could be prevented. The only words she uttered before being removed to the hospital were, " damn the drink." The woman died a few hours alter her entrance to the hospital. When sober she wiis an industrious, kind-hearted personWilliam Tirrell, while standing on the deck of the Taiaroa steamer, was knocked over into the hold, falling sixteen feet. He was picked Up insensiblo, with severe spinal and other injuries, and is not expected to recover. He is a single man, and a native of Tasmania. No blame attaches to the ship. Taiaroa tailed noon to-day south. The Hinetnoa, with Sir George Gray, b expected to leave Auckland for Wellington on Saturday or Monday next.
