FREQUENCY OF FIRES IN OTAGO. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) DUNEDIN. 28th November.

A slander trial is to occupy the attention of Mr. Justice Williams and a jury at Invercargill next month; £500 damages are claimed trom J. H. Kerr, hank manager, by George Jeffries. In consequence of the number of small fires which have recently happened in the province, chiefly in the suburbs of Dunedin, the Insurance Companies have decided to reinstate all insured buildings destroyed, in preference to paying the amounts of insurance to the insured persons. The Harbor Board has been memoriali'ed to institute an inquiry as to how Msh got a lease of one of its sections at a nominal rent. It is alleged that the land is worth nearly tun limes the amount paid by him.
