CHINESE AFFRAY AT THE PALMER. Sydney, 24th August.
From C -oktown news has been received of a very serious disturbance at the goldfields on the Palmer, which took place on the 15th inst. There was a stand-up fight between eight hundred Chinese from the province of Macao and five huHdred of those hailing from Canton, who rolled up against each other well armed with gum and revolvers. A regular melee ensued, in which at least two were kilied aud a large number wounded, but bow many is uncertain. A number of the native police were despatched to the scene of the conflict by the warden, aud they succeeded, iv arresting some of the ringleaders, and they have since been sentenced to six months' imprisonment. It is supposed that the origin of the row was a notorious gambler, Ah Lee, letting claims to the enemies of his own province at six shillings per head. 1 1 is known that ¦several Europeans took part in the fight, either for the sake of plunder or the pleasure of joining in the melee. Order has been partially restored, but there are still signs of enmity between the two tribes.
To hit a sleepy worshipper on the head with a contribution box is merely a bump of be-.c-volenee.
