THE WAIAPU MURDER.
Mr. Sheehan yesterday invited the native chiefs of the Poverty fiay district at present in Wellington — about eleven in number— to his official residence. He then informed them that he had determined to arrest the Waiapu murderers at all hazards, and he asked the chiefs to co-operate with him. They unanii mously promised their assistance, and at once j wrote and forwarded telegrams to their respective tribes; ordering then* people to give every assistance to the police, in oraer that the accused men might be captured. The following telegram has been received from the Press Agency : — " Napier, sth September. " Inspector Scully has received a telegram from Sergeant White stationed at Gisborne, stating that to-morrow morning he will proceed to Waiapu, accompanied by Constable Walsh and Sergeant Ballard, of the A C. Force, the latter to act as interpreter, to take steps for the arrest of the murderers of the native woman, to whom Mr Sheehan referred in the House on Wednesday afternoon." LATEST. ARREST OP THB MURDERERS. It will be seen from the following telegram, received this afternoon by the Hon. Mr. Sheehan, from Captain Porter, Gisborne, that the murderers have been arrested. From the general tenor of the telegram, it is gathered that the natives have themselves arrested the men, after the preliminary inquiry which they held yesterday, and hold them in confinement until the English constables arrive. The telegram is as follows : — Gisborne, 6th September. A messenger has just come in from Waiapu, and reports that the prisoners have been arrested, and are in readiness to be handed over to the police on arrival of the steamer. I am only in possession of the bare particulars, but am glad to be able to report so favorably. 1 1 is probable that two other prisoners will be charged with rape.
