INQUEST.
Au inquest was hold at the Morguo this ifternoon, before Dr. Johnston, coroner, and a ury, touching the death of Nowlan Powell, he" fatal accident to whom was described in >ur la«t night's issue, ilie deceased hating jeen killed by a fall of earth and rock while •xcavating In Captain Williams' ballast yards, Upper Wfllis-strcef. The jury having viewed the body the folowiug evidence was gi\cu :—: — John Furness deposed that he was a taborer, md was working yesterday afternoon with tha deceased Nowlan "Powell, at the excavatiou in Upper Willis-slreet. Deceased was filling a Iray under the face of the hill, when a landslip took place and buried Mr. Miller, the Foreman, and deceased. Witness seeing that Mr. Mil'er had extricated himself at once went to get out deceased, and hnd partly succeeded in treeing him when another slip came down right upon deceased and covered him entirely. Witness bad known deceased for aboiii loui 1 months. He was aged about 3*2 and not married. He was a untive of London, and had been many years in Queensland By the Foreman — We take all the precautions we can against slips. Generally there is a mau to watch and tell us when they arc coming. There was no ouo yesterday b9causc we did not expect a slip. It is dangerous work at the best of times. Dr. Harding said he was called in to deceased yesterday afternoon, aud found him linlf buried in earth, only his head and shoulders being exposed. It took some little tim<» to extricate him. He was quito (lend. Witnc«s x found the body much crushed aud generally contused. The loft collar-bone was broken". Death was caused by suftbeatiou through pressure upon the chest. Other evidence hnyiug been given, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
