THE CITY BANK ACCOUNT.
. « TO THE EDITOR OP THE EVENING POST. Sir— You will observe by to-day's telegrams that the Auckland City Council has decided to call for tenders for the Corporation banking account for three" years. The Wellington City Council lias just rejected a similar motion. One of these bodies has done a very foolish thing. Councillor Goldie, who moved the motion in the Auckland City Council, and to whom I am indebted for the iden, is a shrewd man of business. Ho knows that money, like other commodities, may be paid for very dearly where there is an absence of competition, and from * the little investigation I have made I am conA vinced that the Wellington Corporation is paying too dearly for its accommodation. But" I was perfectly well aware that my motion would not be carried. The Bank of New Zealand had sufficient influence in the Council to prevent it. Nevertheless, I undertake to say that if the bank account were tendered for the city would save at least £1000 a year. I have heard a great mauy people complain of the large salary paid to the City Engineer (£800). Hare is a means by which more than the whole of that salary could bo saved to the city. Let tlioso who pooh-pooh the idea put it to the test. I am, &c, G. Fisher.
Thnt's What we Want.—" Yes, Mr. Parson, jour religion is all very well, but it allows only one Bay of rest in the week. I want a religion that'll let me rest all the week." Adrift. — The earth is full of outcasts since Canton Farrar and Henry Ward Beecher abolished hell. Before that they felt sure of a place to go to. — Boston Post. When at college, Surteea was waiting on the Dean on business, and feeling cold stirred the fire. "Pray, Mr. Surtees," said the great man, "do you think that any other undergraduate in this college would have taken that liberty ?" " Yes, Mr. Dean," was the reply, " any one as cool as I am."
