NEWS BY THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL. THE ENGLISH FLEET.
London, 14th February. — Dispatches from various sources confirm the statement that a British fleet of six vessels entered the Dardanelles on Wednesday. The Turkish Pasha made a formal protest at , Chanak-Calessi, but no measures were taken to prevent their passage. The { Admiral's 'orders were to enter, the Straits with or without leave, and make arrangements to Becure his rear. The ships were prepared for action. The destination of the fleet is said to be the Princess Islands, In the Sea of Marmora, thirteen miles south of ' Constantinople, ! Caicago, 14th February. — A Times London special says : "No fleet of any other Power, except, perhaps, a single Austrian war vesaely has accompanied the English through the Dardanelles." A Tribune London special says : "It is understood here that Admiral Hornby's orders have been changed, so that he will proceed with his whole force instead of bix ships, as at first directed, and that he is to use his guns, if necessary, to pass the forts. This movement, and the reported mobilisation of the Austrian army, gives a very warlike aspeot to affairs, < and little or nothing iB heard about the conference."
