We gather from our Melbourne ifilod that there appears to be some ground for suspicion that the French Government are about to release 600 French convicts from New Caledonia, and there is some fear that they will be poured upon Australian shores. The Colonial Secretary of New South Wales has asked for the action of the several Australian colonies in a protest against such a proceeding. ; % It appears that we are to have anothor Tichborne infliction. The Melbourne correspondent of the BalJarat Star writes :— " Arthur, Orton, the real, the veritable, that legal myth of whom so many were incredulous, has been found, and Tichborne bonds are up again. By the time this is perused by your readers the news will have been cabled to England, to gladden the heart of the connnee of Newgate, and the holders of Tiehborne debentures will have tumbled the crisp documents in their cash-boxes,' and have speculated how they shall expend their prospective fortunes. To the Melbourne agent of the claimant belongs the credit of the discovery, for after intent fossicking he has discovered, or believes he has, the real Arthur Orton, who has been for many years under the alias of Alfred Smith, an inmate of the lunatic asylum on the banks of the Parraraatta River, within fifteen miles of Sydney."
