ACCIDENT TO THE S.S. HAWEA

The following telegram was received by the Press Agency this afternoon :—: — Nelson, 28th August. The s.s. Hawea on Saturday afternoon struck on a sunken rock between Jackson's Head and the inner rock. The sea was calm at the time. She made a good deal of water coming on to Nelson. The rock on which the Hawea struck, is in Queen Charlotte's Sound, a short distance inside the place where the Rangitoto was wrecked. We understand that the Hawea was to be beached at Nelson ; in order that the full extent of the damage might be ascertained. A later Press Agency telegram says : — The Hamea is not injured. The report that she was leaking is incorrect.
