(Per Press Agency.) GRAHAMSTOWN. 26th August.

The first return from the Welcome Company, Waitekauri, Ohinemuri, was brought down today. It was 151ozs 6dwts, and the quantity of stuff crushed 58 tons. The result is eminently satisfactory, being regarded as an assurance of a great future for the district. 27th August. A fire broke out shortly before 3 o'clock this morning on the beach road, Grahams town, which destroyed the Kuranui Hotel and store belonging to Paterson, a grocer's and blacksmith's shop, and a number of other tenements. The scene of the fire was very thickly built upon — large crushiug mills and powerful mining machinery (including that of the United Pumping Association plant) being in close proximity. The fire brigades were promptly on the spot, and the 'exertions made by the employees of the Pumping Association and others were effectual in beating tho fire down in about one hour, and so preventing its spread. Besides the number of buildings in the neighborhood of the fire, there is a net-work of wooden tramways erected over the road close to where the fire occurred, and fears were entertained that they would go as well as the Pumping Association property ; but fortunately this disaster was averted, the hydraulic engine of the Association being of most valuable help in putting out the fire. So well did the firemen work, that the last building burnt almost touched one that was saved. It is believed that the fire originated in the Kuranui Hotel, although it is at present unoccupied. Paterson and some others will be serious losers. 28th August. There appears little doubt but that the fire yesterday morning was the work of an incendiary, and originated in the Kuranui Hotel, which was the only building insured. It was insured in the Standard Office for £450. An inquest will be held.
