CABLE MESSAGES. [reuter's special to press agency.]
Sydney, 25th August. It is understood that the Governor has received a despatch stating that war between England and Russia was imminent. The City of Sydney sailed for Kandavu at three o'clock. The captain of the schooner Vibilia writes denying the statement in the Auckland papers by the mate of the same vessel. Kerosene is scarce ; the only shipment expected is held at 2s 3d. Candles, 9|d. Adelaide flour, £11 to £12. Wheat, 5s 3d. New Zealand flour, £11 to £11 ss. Oats plentiful ; New Zealand, 2s 4d to 2s 6d. Hennessy's brandy, quarters, 7s. Melbourne, 26th August. Two men were arrested yesterday on the arrival of the Somersetshire from London, on account of the great jewel robbery. A telegram, dated 12th August, reports Devoe's kerosene risen to 24 cents, and on the 16th that all sugars had further advanced £1.
