Some little excitement has been roused here among the members of the Protestant Church. A clergyman, the Rev. Mr. Robinson, who recently arrived from England, has obtained great popularity through preaching very eloquent and able sermons. He always filled the church when it was known that he would ? reach. Givat jealousy arose among the other 'rotestant clergymen, and Mr. Robinson was accused of pirncy. He denied the accusation, put his sermons in print, and challenged his opponents to the proof. At last he has been so persecuted as to be compelled to resign his curacy, which resignation was curtly accepted. The parishioners, hearing of the circumstance, demand a meeting to debate the matter, which will come oft' next week, and is expected to be lively. Nine out of every ten of the people in the parish sympathise with Mr. Robinsou. The railway to Waipawa is expected to be opened this week. A man named M'Donnell has been fined five pouuds for dr aakenness in a railway carriage. Another charge against him of indecent assault on a female fell through. Mauaena, a native chief, accused of disorderly behaviour in a railway carriage, manages to keep out of the reach of the police. Last Monday, when the police came up, he got into a canoe and kept in the middle of the river, chaffing lus pursuers. «
