THE KAIWARRA CREEK.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVEKINO POST. Sir— ln your issuß.bf last evening. I read t letter on the Kaiwarra creek, written by a gerson who styles himself a resident. Now, ir, hi answer to "A Resident," 1 wish emphatically to state that his letter is a tissue of falsehoods : that the stream is made a receptacle for blood, hair, offal, and the refuse from the tannery, which are most Injurious to the health of the inhabitants, through the effluvia arising therefrom.. The stream, which at one time was used by the inhabitants and the public at large, for domestic .purposes and for water for their horses, is now at the present time an abomination of pollution and putrid water, and it is a disgrace to any, community, and to the local Board of Health to countenance any such thing! He also states that the report recently made springs from illfeeling or ignorance. Now. or, I wish to inform " Resident " that it does not arise from either ; that numerous complaints having been made, not only by the inhabitants, but by the public at large to the Local Board, about the noxious, and injurious smells, which arise from the stream, they as conservators of the public interests wrote to the persons offending to have the nuisance abated.-' The persons not complying, the Local Board are taking proceedings under their bye-laws, and the Public Health Act to make the village as it ought to be. which, at the presents: - certainly, 'does not smell of Araby the blest. He further states that it is absurd to use the water for domestic purposes, inconsequence flf nearly every, yard in Kaiwarra draining into It, and being too dirty and too shallow to ¦be appropriated, to .any other .use. Now sir, 'before 'the refuse -.trom the ' tannery was drained into ' it> if,- was a puie and, limpid stream,, used . by\ nearly every inhabitant of the r village* -Hfor domestic ¦ and other purposes, but when the typhoid fever raged in 1873 -in the- village, the medical gentleman sent down by the Government to inspect the village prohibited the inhabitants from using the; same, owingrtothe filthy and injurious matter it contained. fhe " Resident ".-¦ still- farther states, : that newly - every house- is. provided with a.well of water from which they receive- within- a few feet from the surface beautiful spring wateft Now. Sir, this -is quite incorrect^' as : there are only, six wells from .which water . for. drinking^purposes can be obtained, as there are : Beveral., wells sunk and full of water, but are quite-unfit for use. r 111 1 am,"&d.; ' q • -¦'• ; <A :RBAL TtJßslDßtf T/
