HOW MAORIS TREAT THEIR WIVES.
The Dunedin Guardian fays : — Some of the residents in the neighborhood of the Moori Kaik at Taiaroa Heads adopt rather peculiar measures for the enforcement of obedience in their wms. In justice to the Maoris, however, we (Bruce Heia d) must state that the men we aiiude to are pake* , has. The prospect of a dinner to Taiaroa, the Ma ri chief, and member of Parliament, naturally caused a little stir amongst the settlers in the locality, aud one lady, without consulting her husband's wiahvs iv the matter, announced her inten* tion of being present at the banquet. Whether the husband objected to his better half doing honour to Taiaroa, or whether he thought he should have been consulted in the matter, we cannot say ; but at any race he determined that she should not go. He tied her hands behind her back, and then made her fast to a> rafter with a rope, and proceeded to thrash her with a strap. When he had Come to I the conclusion that she had been brougkt to a proper frame of mind in respect to banquets and her obligations to him she hctd a worn to "love, honor, and obey," he released her. Another man also found occasion to punish* his wife a few days ago. He tied her hands together,- and then threw her into about two feet of water, ahe floundered about until she was lidlf -drowned, and was then taken out iv a very weak state. Some restorative appeared to be necessary, so she was piaced cl >s« to a large tire until she showed decided sigus of animation. There is a magistrate at the Kaik. and tel graphic communication has just been established between that place and Port Chalmers, where there is a police station ; but no action was taken to puuiah the offender ia either of the ca>es we have mentioned. The Western Methodist has invented a new name for an old lady ; it calls her a '• matriarch." Parisian ladies are said to " look like pencils covered with rftinunt."
