A SWEEPING REFORM.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE EVENING POST. Sir — It is stated pretty freely iv town that Councillor Gillon's idea in bringing forward what he calls his "sweeping motion," is to oust the City Surveyor, so that when provincialism is abolished the present Provincial Engineer may be put in his place. Councillor Gillqn could not with decency move for the dismissal of one officer of the Corporation, so he agitates for the dismissal of all, knowing well that if his motion is carried, he will vote for the re-appointment of the Town Clerk and his assistant. The City Surveyor has always done his work as well as any other officer of the Council, anct I, for one, certainly would not have recorded my vote in Mr. Gillon's favor if I had foreseen that he was to be guided in his actions as a Councillor by his private friendship and enmity. Trusting that the other Cotxcillors will not allow Mr. Gillon to rule them, I am, &c, An Old Ratepayer.

( ¦ ¦ Mr. James Smith requests us to state that the postponement of his sale at Courtenay Place was duly advertised in the Times this morning, but the persons for whom he was to sell neglected to give the usual notice of postponement as agreed on, by posters and otherwise, hence he is not tp blame for the disappointment of intending buyers.
