GRAHAMSTOWN. 30th December.
Fifteen candidates were proposed, including Sir G. Grey and Sir J. Vogel. The show of hands was as follows : — Sir Or. Grey, 87 ; Rowe, 181 ; Robert Graham, 8; Carpenter, 51 ; H. E. Campbell (lawyer), 2 ; John Gibbons, 122 ; Comes, 60 ; A. Brodie, 58 ; Charles O'Neill, 4 ; Stephenson. 69 ; Leyden, 37 ; Sir J. Vogel, 21 ; C. F. Mitchell, 169; J. Mackay, 182; J. Sheehan, 9. A ruse was adopted which prevented the intended proposer and seconder of Sir G. Grey from speaking. Carpenter was then proposed merely to speak in favor of Grey, who was not present. Carpenter and Brodie have retired. Mackay's speech was an attack on Grey. Mackay will not contest the seat. The proceedings occupied over three hours. Sir G. Grey held a meeting last night, which was well attended. /
