The City Council have resolved to purchase the freehold of the University Buildings for Town Hall purposes, for £21,000, provided possession be given by the Ist - March next. In reply to the deputation requesting him to allow himself to be nominated a member for* Dunedin, Sir J. Richardson said although he had resolved since 1866 to abandon active political life, the organic constitutional alterations in contemplation forced him to respect his duty as a citizen, and give expression to his sentiments at this crisis in the history of the province and colony. He promised to reply next week, saying although he would be much pained to decline any requisition, he feared his failing powers might prevent his acceding to the request. The races to-day were largely attended, and the weather was beautiful. For the Maiden Plate of 40 so vs., Pakeha, who had been heavily backed, was scratched. 1$ was won by Steamer (7st- 51b), Blue Peter (Bst 111b) being second. It was a splendid race. The St. Andrew's Handicap of 100 Boys., two miles, was woe by Tambourini (9st slb), King Philip (Bst) being second, aad Pertrobe (7st 81b) third. It was a most exciting race, and was only won by half-a-neck. ?
