EDUCATION BOARD.
An ad.ourned meeting of the Education Board was held to-day. Present— The Hon. C. J. Pharazyn (chairman), Hon. W. Gisborne, Rev. J. C. Andrew, Rev. J. Ross, Messrs. Toomath, Beetham, and Bunny. A long conversational discussion took place relative to the financial position of the Board in reference to certain necessary work. It appeared from a schedule carefully compiled by the Inspector and secretary that the sum immediately and urgently needed for the sixty existing schools (includiug repairs, alterations, teachers' residences, &c.,) • was £5065, or, including the new Terrace school, about £7,000 and this would not make any provision
for various new schools already required, the number of which is daily increasing. To meet this demand, the entire* extent of the Board's resources amounted to the Provincial Council's building grant of £3000, which would become due during the next six months, but was by no means absolutely certain to be available. It was considered probable that a pro rata grant would be continued by the General Government after the expiration of the current financial year. After a long discussion it was resolved that the whole estimated revenue of the Board already being appropriated, the Board regretted that they would be unable to grant any applications involving the expenditure of money. Mr. Toomath gave notice of an amendment to the resolutions re aid to denominational schools (published in our last night's issue) to tke effect that the Board, while sympathising with every effort to promote education in this province on the part of the various religious denominational bodies, nevertheless is of opinion that grants in aid cannot be given until provision has been made for schools of a national character. Some discussion took place on an application from the Inspector for leave of absence for his Christmas holidays, Mr. Toomath contending that the Inspector's holidays ought to be precisely the same as those of the masters. The Board, however, granted his application, and gave leave of absence from the first week in December to the first week in January. Some routine business having been gone through, the Board adjourned until the next regular meeting in January, 1876. ""A special meeting, however,* will be held in December, probably on the 12th.
