AUCKLAND. 28th August.
A contributor writes to the Star as follows :—" Mr. Ormond in his speech accuses Sir George' Grey of breaking the law in land matters in the Wairarapa, when he granted land to Clifford and Weld, the pioneer runholders of New Zealand, on the condition that they would settle stock on it. At that time New Zealand was wholly dependant on New South Wales for her stock. Governor Eyre, afterwards of Jamaica, was the lieutenant-Governor of New Munster. Sir George and Eyre could not agree on matters of land policy. Mr. Ormond was Eyre's brother-in-law and private secretary, and is now spitting forth venom on account of Sir George Grey exposing Eyre's and Ormond's little games to the Home Government, which necessitated Eyre's removal. Ormond speaks of the Provincial Council of Auckland stultifying itself, but how often has Ormond, as Superintendent of Hawke's Bay, by threats of resignation, freightened the runholders, who depended on him to get lands sold to them for ss. an acre, and compelled them to eat resolutions which they had on the previous day passed. 30th August. A petition calling upd"n the Auckland members to resist the Governmentmeasures word by word, if necessary, until Parliament expires, was placed in the market on Saturday night, and received 500 signatures. It has been signed by nearly all the leading men of the city. The first portion will be sent to Wellington by the Hawea to-day, and other portions by each steamer as they are signed.
