WELLINGTON BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

A meeting of the Wellington Benevolent Society was held on Tuesday. Present — The Chairman, the Bishop of Wellington, Revs. J. S. Smalley, W, H. West, and A. Stock, Measrs. C. J. Pharazyn, C. !P, Powles, and L. Levy. Paid in — Mrs. Buxton, ss ; a Friend, 03. The report of the committee, with a balance sheet, were read and adopted. The report was as follows :— The committee of the t Wellington Benevolent Society would again congratulate their subscribers that the number of cases relieved by thorn has nob been larger than in past years. The distress they seek to meet must always exist, but they would especially mention one chief cause, which might possibly be diminished — the desertion of wives by their husbands. This has always brought a heavy charge upon their resources. They would recommend that, where it is practicable, suob. men should be brought back, and compelled to work for the public benefit, and in some measure thus repay the cost they have caused. The Wellington Benevolent Society has now ceased to exist. It has faithfully carried out the principles on which it was originally established, and has carefully relieved all distress that oaine before it, with the only enquiry whether the applicants were really necessitous. The Wellington Benevolent Institution, which takes its place, is incorporated, and one great defect under which tbe former society labored is thus removed. The institution can now hold moneys and lands in trust, and will take. immediate steps to ensure the appropriation to some permanently useful purpose of the present unused charitable balances. Arthur Stock, Secretary W. B. Society. The balance sheet showed that Bub* scrip tions and donations to the amount of £270 4s had been received during the year. The amount expended in relief was £209 lls j and the balance in hand on the 18th January was £30 18a lid.
