The Tauranga Record says : —
Notwithstanding the dulness prevailing at present, we have reason to be proud of the confidence of capitalists ia the ultimate success of this place, exhibited in thenuniber, style, and dimensions of the various stores recently erected and in course of erection. Foremost of those in existence is that of Mr. N orris, from designs by Mr. Burrows, which is handsome, and with interior arrangements very complete. There is a large assembly room on the first floor. Mr. Chadwick's great block of buildings at the corner of the Strand and Harrington street, now rapidly approaching completion, comprise an hotel and store under the one roof, and is to cost £1200. The post office, at the store of Mr. Ball, has been I eclipsed by more recent structures, but in one respect it is superior to others, as a wide verandah projects over the footway, affording shelter for applicauts on a rainy day. Mr. Douglas's Bay of Plenty store bears favorable comparison with any building in the place, and, like all the rest, possesses a balcony overlooking the harbor. It is satisfactory to think that when the town shall have increased in siae and population its earliest edifices will be of a character of which we shall have no reason to be ashamed.
