RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. This Day. (Before the Hon. J. C. Crawford, R.M.)

PLEASANT NEIGHBORS. James Carson was brought up on tlte charge of having violently assaulted Francis Johnston, a pensioner, residing on the Karori Road. The complainant, an old man, with a long white patriarchal-looking beard, said that the prisoner, on Wednesday last " muzzled" him , by the beard, knocked him down, punched " his head, and Jumped on him ; in addition to which catalogue of personal injuries, he complained o£ prisoner's house being the resort of bad and disorderly characters, and a common nuisance. The accused denied the charge altogether, and said Johnston was a " cranky old man," whom the boys in the neighbourhood delighted to tease "by " clodding" stones against the tin wluire iv which he lived, when he would rush out sometimes with a gun, and sometimes with a sword, and threaten destruction to all and sundry. The Bench appeared to think there was not much to choose between the parties, and merely bouud Carson over to keep the peace for six months in £20 on his Wa recognisances, aud to pay the costs of the hearing. William Bergin was fined 20s, or'm default 4.S hours' imprisonment, for having been drunk while in charge of a horse and dray, which he was in the habit of.leaving uncared for at the door of a public hou^e while he indulged in unstinted potations within.
