RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. This Day. (Before the Hon. J. C. Crawford, R.M.)
DRUNKENNESS. John Kelty, a most devoted worshipper of the Bacchanalian deity, who had on previous occasions paid rather dearly for his allegiance, was brought up, charged with running about the streets in a most Adatn-like simplicity of costume yesterday afternoon, when under the influence of liquor.and in addition to a fine of '20s, was sent to gaol for seven days with hard labor. A CRUEL STEPMOTHER. Elizabeth South, a well-dressed young woman, was placed in the dock charged with cruelly ill-treating her step-daughter Lavinia, a child of about four years of age. Mr. Bocia.se appeared for the prosecution^ /ia<J, lmving opened the case, called {Sergeant Crowder, who Baid that from information he received, lie proceeded to prisoner's house last night, and asked to see the child. Prisoner brought the child forHard. It was dreadfully bruised about the \>ody, ami the face and arms were particularly disfigured, the former being all swollen, with every feature distorted. Prisoner refused to cross-examine, and in rather a flippant tone asked what business anybody had with her and the child, whom she had flogged once, and would do so again when necessary. Isabella Flendell said she lived in the same house as prisoner, and that she saw the child quite well on Sunday last. During the week prisoner did not let the child out, but yesterday the child got out, and the witness saw how terribly it was bruised, and told prisoner, who ordered her to mind her own business. The child was produced in court, and presented a frightful spectacle, her eyes being closed and swollen, and bur body scored in every direction with deep marks. Mr. Borlase trusted that his Worship would remand the case, as the police hoped to find out something of the prisoner's previous character, and a remand was granted until to-morrow. The prisoner was removed from the duok in custody, and the poor little victim of her unnatural cruelty was kindly taken care of by some neighbours.
