Language Problem

DIFFICULTIES IN WALES

Only 811,000 Welshmen of a population of 2,500,000 can speak English and Welsh. Of the remainder, more than 1,500,000 speak .only English and 98,000 only Welsh. The Ministry of Education has decided that every child in Wales

should have a chance of learning ;both languages at school. i j It is suggested that, in nursery! I and infant schools, children should be taught in the mother tongue— j English in districts where English is spoken and Welsh where Welsh is spoken—and that study of tahe second language should begin in the junior school.

Only under liberty can we hurry the tempo of human advance.—William Allen White.
