The story concerns the desperate attempts of five young R.A.F. flyers shot down in a raid over France, to outwit the sinister Gestapo and escape to England. In this they are aided and abetted by Joan, a youthful barmaid, Father Ant'oine, and Mile. Rosay, .venerable agent of the British espionage system. Paul Lavallier, leader of the hapless squadron, hides his comrades with the aid of Father Antoine, in the Paris sewers, then seeks to contact British Intelligence and arrange an escape. He meets Joan, the barmaid, who shelters him and becomes, an accomplice, facing arrest and execution at the hands of tlie vigilant Gestapo. After a series of breath-taking sequences, culminating in the capture and death of Mile. Rosay, Joan, leading Paul to believe she will be safe, carries out the escape plot, outwits the Gestapo—but pays the supreme, penalty for her devotion to her lover and her beloved France.
