PARTY POLITICS
CONDEMNED BY SPEAKER AT
SOUTHBRIDGE
ELECTIVE EXECUTIVE
PREFERRED
Politics was a touchy subject, remarked Mr G. B. Couch at the send-off on Tuesday evening at Southbridge, when acknowledging the good wishes of the Southbridge branch of the Labour Party. He said quite frankly that twenty-five years ago the Labour Party would not have been speaking for him. He had voted for Reform up to the tillie of that depression which did not bear speaking about. He made no apology for being a member of the Labour Party, in fact he was proud that he might have had, along with thousands of others, the opportunity of improving the lot of those people who needed a lot of improvement. The ideals which actuated him in joining the Labour Party were similar to those which made him help the R.S.A. and other organisations, the desire to do something for' his fellow men and to,, help those who needed it.
"At the same time," added Mr Couch, "I think the party system long overdue to go into repose. It will never be the best system for getting unity in the country and I hope to see the day when we will have something like an elective executive, when the best men from Parliament will be chosen to form a Government and work for the common good of all people."
