CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL

ESSAYS -ON LINEN FLAX

PRIZES AWARDED

On Friday afternoon a very pleasant function took place at the Leeston School. Early in the week the senior children had visited the linen ' flax factory to see the various processes, and the manager, Mr Robertson, ■offered prizes for the best essays on linen flax written by a boy and a girl. Mrs Robertson visited the school to give the result of the essays, and, in the absence of the headmaster, Mr W. H. Cartwright, was introduced to the school children by Mr L. M. Farrant. He said that Mr Robertson had been so impressed with the essays that he had decided ito give four prizes—the best senior boy and girl, and the best ten-year-old boy and girl. He thanked Mr Robertson for this very generous gift, while the children cheered.

Mrs Robertson then presented the prizes: Senior girl, Christine Lyons; senior boy, Brian McMaster. Ten-year-old girl, Judith McLaughlin; ten-year-old boy, lan Tweedie.

Mr Farrant again thanked Mrs Robertson for visiting the school to present the prizes and asked her to convey the children's appreciation to Mr Robertson.
