The annual meeting of the Ellesmere Territorial Association is to be held at Leeston next Friday evening. Ten Jersey heifer calves, for which there has been no claimant, will be sold at Southbridge Public Pound next Thursday at noon. The annual meeting of the Ellesmere Farmers' Union will be held lon Tuesday, May 20. Mr Ivan Barker, the area officer, will be present.

In connexion with the impressment of .303 rifles, ordered by -the Government, it would greatly assist the police if owners would deliver their rifles to the Police Stations at Leeston or Southbridge as soon as possible. It is understood that any owner of a .303 rifle who is a member of the Home Guard will have his own weapon handed back to him for use as a guardsman.

A special picture of the war in the Middle East has been secured for screening at Southbridge Town Hall next Thursday evening, when a free picture entertainment will be presented by the Leeston Motor Company, in conjunction with the International Harvester Company. This picture is of particular interest to all New Zealanders. Travel pictures and comedies are included in the programme and a fine evening's entertainment is promised.

Splendid entries have been received for the Ellesmere Collie Dog Club's sheep dog trials to be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week on Mr J. W. Graham's property, "Ahuriri," Tai Tapu. Combined with the club trials are the Canterbury Association's open championships. Most of the well-known dog owners in Canterbury are represented by one or more entries and the trials promise to be exceptionally interesting. The judge will be Mr W. Grieve.

On Thursday of this week the Leeston sub-centre of the Red Cross Society will hold its fifth social of the series in the lounge of the Town Hall. The proceeds " on this occasion will be given to the fund which is being raised -to help distressed nurses in Great Britain. Many of these gallant women have been injured and many more have lost all their possessions in the bombing1 raids on hospitals through their devotion to duty. This fund provides an opportunity for the people of the district to show their admiration for the courageous manner in which the people of Great Britain are meeting the continuous air raids. Much of the professional aspect that life assurance has taken on is due to the security which it affords. Men have seen it weather the winds of war and pestilence, of depression and financial adversity— they have seen it steadfast in a time of x disaster. It has been a great rock upon which to found their 'homes and: business, it stands [as a sure foundation in an uncertain world and they are duly appreciative. I
