AFTER THE WAR
."We are going to win this war, and win it thoroughly by smashing Nazism and Fascism. But the whole world, including the German, Italian and French peoples is saying, 'What then?' The people of this country are asking the same question. We are no longer asking whether we can stand it. Material interests and preoccupations no longer count. We are poorer than a year ago, and shall be poorer, but if we put the name of Britain on the map you will see that that will come back. But we shall need a social system fairer and better than in the past, and we must extend to the tasks of peace that spirit of comradeship that has marked the behaviour of our people during this war. Aggression must be stopped before it begins. There should be a reasonable degree of disarmament. The R.A.F., already an international force, should be kept as a nucleus so that in future no dictator will dare raise his head."—Mr Wickham Steed, in a recent, address.
