SCHOOL SHOW

OVER 500 ENTRIES AT LEESTON

GOOD DISPLAY OF FRUIT AND

VEGETABLES

It was flower show day at Leeston Consolidated School yesterday, an event for which the children had been looking forward to for some time with the keenest interest. Four of the class rooms were used for displaying the exhibits, of which there were well over five hundred, a big advance over last year. With the aid of desks and table tops, effective displays were made in each room. The work of preparation was done by the children under the supervision of the teachers. One room was set aside for cut blooms, two others for fruit and vegetables and the fourth for decorative, Agricultural Club work and fruit. In the decorative section some good work was seen, especially in the classes for decorated plates, while the quality of the cut blooms, vegetables and fruit was very good indeed. The effort was a very pleasing one, creditable and most encouraging to the children and to the "teachers. The show has made big strides since it was first commenced a few years ago and is now an established and useful feature in the school year.

Something new at yesterday's show was that the opening ceremony was performed by children. Brian McMaster was the chairman and also spoke on behalf of the boys; Ada Smith spoke for the girls and Joan Amyes for the Agricultural Club. Their remarks were brief and to the point and they carried out their duties very well indeed. Children also had charge of Stalls. The afternoon tea was served under the supervision of the teachers. The vegetables were donated to the school and were sold for school funds.

Tftere was quite a good attendance of the parents during the afternoon. The judges were: Mrs P. B. Birkett and Miss V. Bowis, cut flowers; Mrs G. B. Couch, decorative: Mr V. G. Mason, vegetables (senior), Mr J. T. B. Purser (junior), Mr W. Johnston, fruit and Agricultural Club exhibits.
