MERE GUARDIAN"

SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 1896.

At the meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board an application for the formation of Paddington. St., Leeston, was deferred. An application was made to the Selwyn County Council for a grant for protecting the road on the south bank of the river near Selwyn township.

In Italy's war in Abyssinia, the Shoas repulsed an attack by General compelling his force to retire with a loss of 4000 men, including three generals missing, 60 cannon and all their munitions of war. The disaster occurred near Adowa. Italian Government was sending reinforcements totalling 24 battalions of infantry . and six of artillery and was also calling 80,000 reservists to the colours.
