Sir Thomas Beecham, from the conductor's rostrum at the Queen's Hall, London, reproved a woman for smoking in the stalls during a concert by the Royal Philharmonic Society. The concert was being broadcast, and listeners .all over England heard Sir Thomas say: "You must not smoke, madam." The woman, who was in evening dress, hastily put out her cigarette, while a number of people sitting close to her broke into applause.
