Eilghteen-year-old Fred Richards and his father had a quarrel over the girl Fred intended to marry ; and Fred walked out of the farmhouse home near Long Eaton, Derbyshire. His father and mother did not at first believe that Fred would not return, but, eventually, heartbroken, they became resigned to his absence. All that was seven years ago. The other day Farmer Richards was at work in the cowshed when a hand clapped him on the shoulder and a voice said, "How's dad?" He turned and faced his son—dressed in khaki.
