NOT WANTED

FOX HUNTING BY B.E.F.

FRENCH REFUSE PERMISSION,

(From The Guardian's London Correspondent)

LONDON, January 20

Fox-hunters and beaglers in the British Expeditionary Force wanted to have packs of hounds sent over from Britain, but the French authorities were not willing. "The Ministry of the Interior is flatly turning down all applications from officers and men in France who wish to continue the sport over there as a means of exercise and training," a former M.F.H. said this week. A British officer writing from France in "Horse and Hound" states that he has been refused permission to hunt over certain areas. He asked why. "The firist reply received," he writes, 'was that the French, unlike the English, treated the war in a more serious manner, as it was their country at stake. It was pointed out to me -• that the French were determined to put all their efforts into winning the war. Therefore, shooting was prohibited, so that there should be no waste of gunpowder and shot."
