WINDING-UP FAVOURED

DRAINAGE BOARDS ASSOCIA-

TION

PROPOSAL UNDER CON-

SIDERATION

Some years ago an organisation of representatives of drainage boards was formed in the North Island, of which the Ellesmere Board became a member. Its main work was to revise .the Drainage Act and to make proposals for improvement to the Government, as well as to look after the interests of its members. In view of local body amalgamation proposals, consideration was now being given by members to winding up the association. If this were done there would be a surplus of funds, of which Ellesimere's share would be £7/14/-. The association had a membership, of 19 out of 60 boards. The facts were contained in a letter from the secretary of the association, read at the meeting of the Ellesmere Lands Drainage Board on Wednesday, when the opinion of the board was sought on the wind-ing-up proposal.

Mr F. Miller, who was the board's representative on the association, said that under the circumstances the best thing to do would1 be to agree to the winding-up.

Mr F. Coop thought that there might be an opportunity for the association to do some useful work when the Government brought down its proposed Drainage Bill. It might be that the proposals therein would be drastic so far as the boards were concerned and the continuance of the association might be justified.

The chairman said that he believed the Ellesmere Board was the only South Island! member. It was in a different position to other drainage

boards

Mr Millar said that the association had done a good deal of work in bringing the Drainage Boards Act up-to-date, but for some reason the Government could not be brought to accept the recommendations.

The board decided in favour of winding-up the association.
