PEEPS INTO THE PAST

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO,

EXTRACTS FROM THE "ELLES-

MERE GUARDIAN."

Saturday, March 31, 1894

A letter was read at the Selwyn County Council meeting from the Springs Road Board offering to contribute one third of the cost of making a drain near the canal at Lake Ellesmere, provided the landholders contributed one third and the council a similar amount. This was agreed to. ♦ ♦ The bath in the school grounds at Doyleston had been finished, some of the residents assisting the committee in this work. The bath was 76 feet long and 26 feet wide, the depth being from 3£ feet to 7S feet. The work was done mainly by voluntary labour. ♦ ♦ At a cricket match, Leeston-South-bridge v. Irwell, played at Meadowbank, the combined team won by 34 runs, the winners scoring 60 and 50 in two innings and Irwell 54 and 22. Members of the teams were:—South-bridge-Leeston—Moorhead, Cooper, Willis, Hill, T. Cooper, Hight, Brown, A. Cooper, Withers, Flamey, Wright; Irwell —McDonald, Graham, Rhodes, Smith, Heslop, R. Coe, Chamberlain, F. Coe, Woodman, Gardiner, and Perry. ♦ ♦ A social gathering commenced in the afternoon at Killinchy was continued during the evening, being largely attended on both occasions. The purpose was to give a send-off and presentation to Miss Tipler, who had been organist for the Gospel Temperance Society for many years and who was leaving for the North Island.
