SUB-ASSOCIATIONS v CANTERBURY
MATCH AT LEESTON
Although the prospects in the early morning were not very promising, the weather remained fine on Saturday for the tennis match between the sub-associations and Canterbury, played on the Leeston courts. A fine sporting spirit was\ Shown by the players and all the games were thoroughly enjoyed. Hospitality was extended to the visitors and arrangements were in the hands of Mr R. H. Ford, manager of the sub-associa-tion's team. The match proved very interesting, the play being even throughout. With three sets to go the sub-associa-tions were leading by three wins, but they were unfortunate enough to lose the last three sets. This made the scores of each 31 sets, 16 rubbers. The sub-associations, however, won 315 games to their opponents' 295. The combined team won all the singles except one. The highlight of the day's play was the game between Watson, who took Pattinson's place, and H. A. Barnett, winner of many championships. Though Barnett .was successful his opponent put up a splendid fight. In the following details sub-association players are given first:— Men singles—H. A. Barnett (MidCanterbury) defeated S. Bullard 6-0, 6-4; C. Minifie (Peninsula) defeated V. Hammond 6-5, 6-3; F. Teear (Ellesmere) defeated A. M. Hatch 5-6, 6-5, 6-2; J. D. Appleby (North Canterbury) defeated J. Gribble 6-5, 6-2; R. Reid (Malvern) defeated M. Sharman 6-0, 6-3. Women's singles—Mrs A. C. Fraser (North Canterbury) lost to Mrs V. C. Browne 0-6, 5-6; Miss E. Meredith (Mid-Canterbury) lost to Miss E. Inwood 4-6, 6-4, 3-6; Mrs F. W. Dickens (Mid-Canterbury) defeated Miss W. Dryden 6-4, 6-2; Miss H. Harper (Mid-Canterbury) lost to Mrs R. F. Sullivan 5-6, 3-6; Miss M. Watkins (North Canterbury) defeated Mrs A. Grant 6-3, 6-2; Miss Hewton (Ellesmere) lost to Miss N. Smither 5-6, 2-6; Miss Kay (Peninsula) lost to Miss J.
